Benny Solo Sessions

Every Wednesday evening from 21:00 until midnight, ABBAradio.com takes you on a journey into the world of Benny Andersson – ABBA’s master of melody, arranger, producer, and one of Sweden’s most important composers of modern times. This programme doesn’t just play the ABBA hits that bear his unmistakable stamp, but also explores his wide-ranging solo work and the many projects he has been involved with across decades.

From his early years in Swedish folk and dance bands, to the dazzling world of ABBA, to musicals, orchestral works, and the beloved Benny Andersson Orkester, Benny’s career is as rich and varied as the music itself. On this page we’ll walk you through his musical life story, including a chronological overview of his work outside ABBA, so you’ll know exactly what you are hearing on Wednesday nights.

Early Life and Musical Roots (1946–1964)

Göran Bror “Benny” Andersson was born on 16 December 1946 in the Vasastan district of Stockholm. His father and grandfather were both passionate accordion players, and music was central to the family home. At just six years old, Benny received his first accordion and quickly began to master it.

Unlike many of his peers, Benny did not pursue formal classical training. Instead, he absorbed music by ear – folk tunes, popular songs, and later the sounds of early rock and roll. By his teens, he had switched to piano and keyboard instruments, fascinated by the versatility they offered. His talent for melody and arrangement became obvious very early.

The Hep Stars – Sweden’s Beatles (1964–1969)

Benny’s professional breakthrough came when he joined The Hep Stars in 1964 as their keyboardist. Often described as “the Swedish Beatles,” the band became one of the most popular groups in Scandinavia, scoring multiple chart-topping singles.

Benny’s role was crucial – not only as a performer but increasingly as a songwriter. His compositions such as Sunny Girland Wedding became big hits in Sweden, and established him as a composer of international potential.

During these years, Benny also met Björn Ulvaeus of the Hootenanny Singers. Their collaboration began casually, writing songs together, but would grow into one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in pop history.

Meeting Björn, Agnetha, and Frida (1969–1972)

By the late 1960s, Benny and Björn had become close friends and co-writers. Their early collaborations included songs for other artists and Swedish-language entries for the Eurovision Song Contest.

It was also during this period that Benny met Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida), who would later become both his musical and life partner. Along with Agnetha Fältskog, the four began experimenting with recording sessions together, testing out vocal harmonies that proved magical.

These experiments laid the groundwork for ABBA.

The ABBA Years (1972–1982)

From 1972 to 1982, Benny Andersson was at the centre of ABBA’s phenomenal success. Together with Björn Ulvaeus, he wrote and produced nearly every ABBA song, shaping the group’s distinctive sound.

Benny’s piano and keyboard lines were central – from the pounding intro of Dancing Queen to the delicate textures of Chiquitita. His gift for melody, combined with Björn’s lyrical instincts, created timeless hits such as Mamma Mia, Fernando, Knowing Me, Knowing You, and The Winner Takes It All.

Benny’s ability to weave pop, folk, and classical influences into accessible songs was unmatched. Even though ABBA disbanded quietly in 1982, his creative journey was only just beginning.

Chess – A Musical Venture (1983–1986)

After ABBA, Benny and Björn turned their talents to musical theatre. Collaborating with lyricist Tim Rice, they created Chess (1984), a concept album and stage musical about Cold War politics played out on a chessboard.

The project yielded several international hits, including One Night in Bangkok (sung by Murray Head) and the ballad I Know Him So Well (performed by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson). The latter became one of the best-selling duets of all time in the UK.

Although Chess had mixed theatrical success, its music has endured and is regularly revived worldwide. It proved Benny could write beyond pop and into the world of dramatic musical storytelling.

Kristina från Duvemåla (1995)

Benny and Björn’s next major project was the Swedish-language musical Kristina från Duvemåla, based on Vilhelm Moberg’s novels about Swedish emigrants to America. Premiering in 1995, the show ran for several years in Sweden and became a national treasure.

The score combined folk-inspired melodies with sweeping orchestration, showcasing Benny’s deep connection to Swedish musical heritage. In 2009, a concert version was staged at Carnegie Hall in New York, bringing the work to international audiences.

Benny Andersson Orkester (2001–Present)

In 2001, Benny formed the Benny Andersson Orkester (BAO), a band blending pop, classical, and Swedish folk traditions. With Benny on accordion and piano, BAO became hugely popular in Sweden. Their concerts often turned into summer dances, drawing audiences of all ages.

The BAO albums include:

  • Benny Anderssons Orkester (2001)
  • BAO! (2004)
  • BAO på turné (2006)
  • Story of a Heart (2009) – featuring a title track with lyrics by Björn Ulvaeus
  • O klang och jubeltid (2011)
  • Mitt hjärta klappar för dig (2012)

The Story of a Heart album marked a rare English-language release, introducing BAO’s unique sound to an international audience.

Film and Classical Works

Benny has also composed music for film, such as the score for Sånger från andra våningen (“Songs from the Second Floor,” 2000). His orchestral writing shows a sophistication rooted in his deep love of folk and traditional melodies.

In 2017, he released Piano, a solo album of stripped-down versions of his compositions – from ABBA classics to BAO and musical numbers – performed simply on grand piano. The album was widely praised for its intimacy and beauty.

The ABBA Voyage Project (2016–2021)

Benny’s role in bringing ABBA back together for the ABBA Voyage digital concert experience in London was pivotal. He and Björn composed two new songs in 2018 (I Still Have Faith in You and Don’t Shut Me Down) which became part of ABBA’s 2021 reunion album Voyage. Benny’s studio wizardry was essential to bringing the band’s legacy into the 21st century.

The Musical Identity of Benny Andersson

Benny’s genius lies in his melodic gift. Whether writing a three-minute pop hit or a three-hour musical, his themes are instantly memorable. He bridges genres: schlager, pop, rock, classical, and folk all flow naturally through his compositions.

He is also a consummate arranger – able to make complex harmonies sound effortless, and to create instrumental textures that support, rather than overwhelm, the singers. His accordion and piano remain his signature instruments, linking his earliest folk roots with his international success.
